Paths Of Destruction : Lessons From Lot

Path To Destruction .mp4

Lot was as wealthy as Abraham at one time. The reason Lot and Abraham separated was that the servants of Lot and the servants of Abraham began to fight over pastures. Lot was very wealthy and influential, but there came a time when Abraham felt they needed to separate. However, the foolishness of Lot was that his eyes were not open to the fact that the reason he was wealthy was not because of his own strength or righteousness.

The Bible says that Lot was righteous (2 Peter 2:7-8), meaning he was upright before the Lord, but his righteousness did not have the capacity to help him prosper. It was through the righteousness of Abraham, through God, that Lot prospered. The favor that was upon Abraham caused Lot to prosper.

When Lot made the decision to move away from Abraham, he was drawn by the lush fields and the seemingly beautiful lifestyle of Sodom and Gomorrah. As he moved away from Abraham, he walked toward a path of destruction. The Bible says in Proverbs 14:12, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." When Lot moved toward Sodom and Gomorrah, it seemed right, but that way led to death and destruction.

The first thing that caused Lot to lose his wealth was that he disconnected himself from the source of blessing. He removed himself from the man who carried the blessing. The second reason Lot lost so much was that he dwelled in a city already judged by God, a place where the lifestyle was compromising and sinful. The Bible says in Psalm 1:1, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." Lot made a decision to stay in a place that compromised his life, his destiny, and everything that concerned him.

The first time we hear of Lot after he separated from Abraham is when his treasures were stolen, and his family was kidnapped (Genesis 14:11-12). Abraham had to gather his men to rescue Lot and recover his possessions (Genesis 14:14-16). Lot was vexed by the unrighteous deeds of the people around him, because of this he lost everything, including his spiritual stability. Imagine that Lot went into Sodom and Gomorrah with herds, servants, and wealth, but he came out with only his two daughters. His wife, who disobeyed God's command, turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). This means Lot lost everything because of the decisions he made.

The key lessons we learn from Lot's story are:

  1. Stay connected to the source of blessing: Lot's prosperity was tied to Abraham, who carried the favor of God. When he moved away, he lost the blessing.

  2. Avoid spiritually compromised places: Lot chose to dwell in a region under God's judgment, and it cost him dearly. The Bible warns us to stay away from ungodly influences (2 Corinthians 6:17).

  3. Seek wisdom and discernment: Pray and ask God for guidance before making decisions. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

  4. Recognize the long-term impact of decisions: Lot's choice to live in Sodom and Gomorrah led to the loss of his wealth, his wife, and his legacy. Small compromises can lead to devastating consequences.

In conclusion, Lot’s story reminds us of the importance of staying connected to those who carry God’s blessing, avoiding spiritually compromised zones, and making decisions that align with God’s will. May we learn from his mistakes and always seek the wisdom of God in our choices.

"May God grant you the wisdom to stay connected to the source of blessing and make decisions that bring life and prosperity. Amen."
